Description
The Church of St Paulinus is a parish church dating from 1931, designed by Naylor, Sale and Woore for the Butterley Company. It is built in a Romanesque style using brick with ashlar and concrete dressings. The roof is gabled with plain tile and flat lead sections and features cogged eaves, tile kneelers, corbels, diaper work, and tile patterning to the gables. Round-headed and Diocletian windows have tile and rebated brick surrounds, and the doors are notable for their scrolled iron and bronze furniture.
The building comprises a nave, chancel, and sanctuary under a continuous roof, along with a north porch, south transept, baptistry, and south porch. The north side of the nave has four windows, while the south side has three. The west end features a central gabled porch flanked by paired lancet windows, with three lancets above. The north porch has a door to the east and north, and a triple window, all with projecting architraves. The chancel has two Diocletian windows above, and the gabled sanctuary has square, coped parapets to the east with moulded copings and two lancets on each side. The east end includes a foundation stone laid by Henry Bishop of Southwell on March 13th, 1931, above which are three lancets. A half-round bell turret is situated in the gable peak of the south transept. The baptistry and south porch have two lancets to the left and a round-headed recess containing a doorway to the right, with three small square lights above.
Inside, the nave arcades feature four bays with round-headed arches, square piers, and square imposts. The roof is a noteworthy kingpost construction with double tie beams and a coved wall plate containing carved interlace patterns. The north and south aisles have splayed window recesses, plank ceilings, and four scrolled bronze wall lamps. The north aisle has a round arch to the east, and the north porch lacks architectural details. The baptistry has a round-headed opening with a central round pier. The south transept houses the organ and vestry. The chancel has a two-bay arcade on each side, with the north arcade having a transom and two stained glass windows above. The sanctuary has a pair of buttresses with stone panels, a projecting stepped brick aumbry on the north side, and a patterned brick recess containing a seating area with scrolled arms on the south side.
The church contains a variety of fittings, including a cruciform brick font with a mosaic top and cover, a panelled brick pulpit with a leaded top edge and bronze handrail, a carved oak clergy desk, a bronze curtain rail and brackets, a Baroque-style communion table and altar rail, and folding chairs. Stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops are also present.
