Description

Ollerton War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled and dedicated in 1920, with additions for the Second World War and later conflicts. It was designed and constructed by R Thompson of Ollerton and is made of Hopton Wood limestone.

The memorial is located at the center of a triangular-shaped memorial garden, bordered by Main Street/Newark Road to the south-west, the River Maun to the north-west, and the mill race to Ollerton watermill to the east. It stands approximately 3.5 meters high and takes the form of a Crusader cross rising from a tall, tapering, rectangular shaft. This shaft is set on a deep, trapezoidal plinth, which is rectangular in plan, and sits on a square, three-step base. The entire structure is supported by a concrete foundation.

The main dedicatory inscription is in leaded lettering on the lower section of the shaft's south-west (front) face. It reads: 'ERECTED / BY THE INHABITANTS / OF OLLERTON, / TO THE GLORY OF GOD, / AND IN GRATEFUL / MEMORY OF THOSE / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1918.' Below this inscription, the names of 16 men who died in the First World War are listed, along with the names of an additional 15 men who died during the Second World War.

On the second step of the base, there is a mid-20th century memorial flower vase inscribed 'IN MEMORY OF / TERENCE ARTHUR / GILLOTT / DIED ON ACTIVE / SERVICE IN CYPRUS / AUG. 28TH 1956 / AGED 21 YEARS.' Below this, on the step, is a late-20th century stone memorial tablet inscribed 'IN MEMORY OF / CORPORAL STEPHEN RUSSELL McCONIGLE / KILLED ON ACTIVE SERVICE IN NORTHERN IRELAND / ON 4TH MAY 1989, AGED 30.'

The memorial is surrounded by a square-shaped flower bed defined by concrete kerbstones and a chain link fence of more recent construction. It is accessible from the north-east and south-east sides via early-21st century tarmac footpaths edged by concrete kerb stones. These later features are not of special interest and are therefore excluded from the listing.
