Description
The Church of St Radegund is a parish church that incorporates fabric from the 14th century, the 18th century, and was substantially rebuilt in the 19th century. It was restored by James Fowler around 1870. The church is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with limestone ashlar detailing, and has a slate roof with a stone-coped east gable and finial.
The church features a very broad west tower dating to the late 12th and 14th centuries, composed of three stages. It has large, six-stage diagonal buttresses on the west side, and single four-stage buttresses on the north and south sides, with five-stage eastern buttresses visible where the later nave was added. The west doorway, dating from around 1185, is a three-order design. The inner order has two slender moulded shafts with capitals featuring veined leaves. The outer orders were restored in the 19th century and include shafts with crocket capitals and grooved moulded abaci. The pointed head above has two inner orders, the outer with chipcarved decoration, a moulded hood mould with foliated label stops, and a ribbed plank door. A late 14th-century window sits above the doorway, with a segmental pointed head, two cusped lights, and a continuous chamfered mullion. A moulded string course defines the second stage. Late 14th-century bell chambers are located on all four sides, each with a segmental pointed head, two cusped lights, and a continuous chamfered mullion. Moulded eaves are present, with gargoyles projecting on the north and south sides. The battlements include ornate corner pinnacles.
The north side of the nave has two pointed 19th-century windows, each with two pointed lights, a cusped oculus above, and a hood mould with label stops. A two-stage buttress with a plinth and string course runs beneath the windows. The 19th-century north vestry has a plinth and a large chimney to the west. Its north side has a rectangular window with three trefoil-headed lights. A doorway to the east has a Caernarvon head and a plank door. The east side of the vestry has two pointed, cusped lights. The east end of the chancel includes a restored 19th-century pointed window of three lights with a transom; the window beneath the transom is blocked. It has 19th-century tracery, a hood mould, and label stops. A plinth runs around the south side of the chancel and nave, containing five pointed 19th-century windows, each of two lights surmounted by a cusped oculus and hood mould. The westernmost window has foliated label stops.
The interior features a large early 14th-century tower arch with a triple chamfered pointed head supported by a cluster of three responds, with a central one larger, having a fillet and plain capitals. A 19th-century organ arch has a pointed chamfered head, a hood mould, and foliated label stops. The roof is a 19th-century timber tie-beam construction resting on stone corbels. Other features include 19th-century pews, a pulpit, an altar rail, and a brass lectern. A 19th-century ornate reredos by A. B. Skipworth contains a copper-gilt relief of the Crucifixion by Conrad Dressler. An octagonal 19th-century font boasts rosette panels and a tall crocketed hood. A single small 19th-century monument and two 14th-century fragments of clustered capitals and octagonal shafts are also present.
