Description
Cottage. Built circa late 17th or early 18th century, with alterations and additions in the 19th and 20th centuries. The original timber frame is now cased in yellow brick, and the roof is tiled with pantiles, hipped at one end. A single axial brick stack is present. The cottage originally comprised two units, with an outshut and dairy to the rear and a baffle entry plan. A one-bay extension was added at the east end in the late 19th century. It is a single-storey building with an attic, featuring a three-bay front with the two bays on the right-hand side projecting under a later roof. A planked door is located on the right-hand side of the front, while to the left is a three-light casement bow window and a sliding sash window with glazing bars. Both the door and sash window have brick segmental heads. Internally, original features remain, including five bay posts that slightly project, and two principal chamfered ceiling beams with run-out stops—the first version—or plain stops—the second version. The kitchen (on the right-hand side) has an iron range, and the parlour (on the left-hand side) retains a small 18th-century chimneypiece and grate. The winder stairs are located beside the stack, or beside the fireplace. Plank doors are throughout. The original roof structure retains intact collars halved and pegged to the face of the principals, clasped purlins, and common rafters.
