Description

St Catherine’s Methodist Church and adjoining church hall, originally built in the 1880s and subsequently altered, now serves as a DIY warehouse. The church hall, initially a school, was constructed in 1881, while the main church followed in 1887, both designed by Charles Bell. A tower and spire were added in 1908 by Withers & Meredith of London.

The buildings are constructed primarily of grey brick, with red brick and stone dressings, and slate roofs, executed in an Early English style. The plan incorporates a nave with clerestory and aisles, a chancel, a transept, a south-east tower with a spire, and a hall attached to the south-west.

The exterior features pointed arched windows. Details include a chamfered plinth, a moulded sill band, dentilled eaves, and coped gables. The nave's west end has a stepped triple lancet. The north aisle features buttresses and 2-light windows with linked hoodmoulds. The south aisle is similar. The chancel has a coped east gable with string courses and a cross; it contains a central moulded doorway with shafts and hoodmould, flanked by lancets, and graduated 2- and 3-light windows above. The transept, to the south-west, exhibits moulded round windows with hoodmoulds. The tower is square and has gabled angle buttresses, a chamfered and moulded string course, and a billeted corbel table. The east side of the tower has a shouldered doorway with a moulded surround and enriched tympanum, alongside lancets with linked hoodmoulds. The recessed upper stage features cusped 2-light openings and octagonal corner shafts topped with spire pinnacles. The octagonal spire has brick bands, blank gabled lucarnes, a finial, and a blind arcaded drum. A gabled corridor links the church to the church hall, which possesses buttresses and a cogged impost band, with three round-headed windows on each side. The hall's south gable features a projecting centre with angle buttresses, a double sill band, two 2-light windows with cusped circles, and flanking lancets.

The interior showcases 4-bay arcades with round granite piers, moulded arches, and hoodmoulds. The clerestory windows have hoodmoulds. The roof is arch braced, with wall shafts. A gallery with raked seats is present at the west end. The chancel features a moulded arch with a hoodmould and granite shafts, a traceried panelled dado, and a stained glass east window dating from 1888. A panelled barrel vaulted wooden roof covers the chancel. The transept has a principal rafter roof, while the hall has an arch braced king post roof.
