Description
Covells Farm House is a house that was originally built in the late 16th century, largely rebuilt in the early 18th century, and altered in the early 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with stucco dressings and features a pantile roof that includes a late 16th-century axial brick stack with bands. The house has a lobby entry plan and is two stories high, with an irregular three-bay front that has a short plinth and a first-floor band. The central entrance consists of a glazed door with a margin overlight, flanked by single glazing bar sash windows. The openings have segmental heads and splayed stucco lintels. On the first floor, there is a central narrow 20th-century window flanked by single glazing bar sashes, also with segmental heads. It is believed that John Smith, the founder of the State of Virginia, was born here in 1580.
