Description
The Appleby Magna War Memorial is a First World War memorial cross, built in 1920 with later additions. It is made from grey granite and is located in the cemetery on Church Street, directly opposite the churchyard of St Michael and All Angels Church. The memorial features a Celtic cross with a tapering shaft that stands on a stepped square pedestal and base. The head of the cross is decorated with relief-moulded knotwork. The shaft bears an inscription in incised lettering that reads: ‘THEIR / NAME / LIVETH FOR / EVERMORE’, while the step is inscribed with ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD’. A metal plaque attached to the pedestal commemorates ‘THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / 1914-1918’, listing the names of 14 local servicemen who died in the war. Additional inscriptions honor those who lost their lives in the Second World War and in Cyprus in 1956.
