Description

Harlain Cottage is a 17th-century cottage located on Bakehouse Lane in Saddington. It features a timber frame with brick panel infill and repair, topped with a corrugated iron roof over thatch. The cottage was originally built as two units and has one and a half storeys, with a 19th-century single bay wing added to the front. The doorway, likely in its original position, is situated at the angle of the wing and includes a rendered casement window and a dormer above it to the left. The principal posts of the timber frame, which probably originally consisted of four panels, are partially visible in the front wall and in the rear wall where they are jowled, and there is some archbracing present. In the gable, the sill, middle rail, and archbraced angle posts support the A-frame roof truss that includes a tie beam and collar. Two other principal trusses can be seen internally. Inside, there is an inglenook and a chamfered lintel from the original back door, as well as an axial stack.
