Description
40 and 40A High Street is a good mid-18th century house featuring a red brick facade with stone quoins and a small modillion eaves cornice. The building has a slate roof and stands three storeys tall, with three well-spaced sash windows that include glazing bars. The windows have gauged flat red brick arches with stone keystones, and the ground floor windows consist of three lights with stone arches. The central entrance is a six-panelled door set back in a stone frame, topped with a moulded stone hood supported by moulded brackets and a radial fanlight. The rear facade is rendered. To the north, there is a plain late 18th or early 19th-century addition made of red brick, featuring a plain wooden eaves cornice and a hipped slate roof. This addition is two storeys high and has three windows with gauged red brick arches and sash windows with glazing bars. It also includes a plain 19th-century door and a segmental arched carriageway entrance on the north side.
