Description
1-6, The Square is a group of six apartments, now used as offices and flats, built between 1803 and 1806. The building was designed by John White and has undergone alterations in the 20th century. It is constructed of ashlar gritstone with ashlar dressings and a Westmoreland slate hipped roof featuring grouped stone stacks with caps.
The main, north-west front has 16 windows. The ground floor has an open arcade of 16 round arches with impost blocks, leading to a recessed 14-window facade. This facade has three irregularly placed doorways with original six-panel doors, door fittings, and overlights, alongside 11 glazing bar sashes. The upper floors have 16 glazing bar sashes, and above those, 16 smaller glazing bar sashes, with one window being blind. The south-west front has 10 windows that are similar to those on the north-west front, though the ground floor has two doors and seven windows set back. The north-east side similarly features 10 windows, with one door and eight windows to a set-back ground floor; upper floors also have various blind windows. The rear of the building was extended and altered in the late 20th century.
Interiors of Nos. 4 and 6 retain a central hall with a staircase rising from the rear. Folding shutters survive on the first floor rear of No. 4. Doors are set within moulded surrounds.
