Description
The range of outbuildings at Dimple Farmhouse consists of former farm structures that have been converted into storage spaces. They date from the mid-17th century to the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The buildings are constructed from coursed squared gritstone, with the earlier section being evenly coursed. The roofs are covered with stone slate, Welsh slate, and blue tiles, with stone copings on the gables of the earlier part. The layout is 'L' shaped, with the earlier section running north-south and the later section at right angles to it. The earlier range has three bays, lacks overlofts, and features a taking-in door on the north gable. The central doorway on the courtyard elevation has been altered and now includes late 20th-century sliding door gear. The rear wall has an altered and blocked central opening, with a later inserted opening on the far right.
Inside, the earlier section has a three-bay double purlin roof supported by two queen strut trusses with collars and ties, along with trenched purlins and a diagonally-set ridge purlin. There is longitudinal wind bracing in the center bay. The later section has five bays, featuring a large inserted double doorway on the east gable and a late 20th-century lean-to on the north side wall. The interior of this section has a single purlin roof supported by three collar and tie beam trusses, with some longitudinal bracing. The two bays at the west end are replacements.
These outbuildings were functionally related to the farmhouse and are a significant part of its setting. They contribute to understanding the function of the building group and showcase many distinctive characteristics of the region's vernacular building traditions.
