Description

The house, dated RGE 1696 on a plaque in the left gable, is likely to have a lower right wing from the 17th century. It is constructed of dressed ironstone with a Collyweston slate roof, coped gables featuring moulded kneelers, and asymmetrical chimneys with ashlar bases and pairs of rebuilt brick shafts. The building follows a lobby entry plan. The main block is two storeys and an attic, with two bays. It has three-light windows with ovolo-moulded limestone mullions and cyma recta cornices; hipped attic dormers have paired leaded casements. A 20th-century door is located on the right side, set within a good 17th-century limestone surround featuring a moulded architrave, pulvinated frieze, and box cornice, with a blocked window above. The left gable end shows traces of blocked single-light windows on either side. To the right is a lower wing of one storey and an attic, with two bays of similar mullion windows – a three-light window to the left and a two-light window to the right. This wing also features hipped dormers with paired wooden casements and a central six-panelled door in a chamfered limestone surround. Inside, the main doorway opens into a lobby containing a winder stair, with the main stack positioned behind. The left bay contains a good 17th-century stone fireplace surround, originally with a bolection moulding, pulvinated frieze, and box cornice, and which has been re-sited from the upper storey to the ground floor.
