Description
The Working Men's Monument, dated 1850, is located in the burial ground to the south of the Milnes Orangery (Unitarian Chapel Hall) on Back Lane. It features a broken column set on a tall plinth, which has an inscription panel that reads: "WORKING MEN'S MONUMENT." This monument was erected through voluntary contributions from 999 residents of Wakefield and the surrounding area in memory of Joseph Horner Jr, a corn miller, as a testament to the high respect and esteem in which he was held for his unwavering advocacy of the religious, moral, social, and political rights and liberties of the people.
