Description

The School of Mineral Engineering at the University of Leeds is an early 1930s university building designed by Lanchester and Lodge. It is constructed from Portland stone with a brick rear and has a roof that is not visible. The building features two storeys with an attic and is symmetrically arranged with a layout of 2:1:7:1:2 bays that project forward in succession.

The structure has a plinth and a first-floor cornice adorned with animal heads, along with a blocking course, while the second-floor cornice is plainer and includes a parapet. The central seven bays are flanked by giant pilasters with acanthus capitals, surrounding windows that have geometrical tracery and decorative panels between them on each floor. The other windows are metal-framed, featuring margin glazing bars and transoms, except for the shorter attic windows.

The bays on either side of the central seven-bay section each contain an opening with a moulded architrave on the ground floor, which includes a panelled double door with a traceried overlight to the left and a window to the right. The first-floor windows have head keystones and corbelled balconies with decorative iron balustrades. Above the central attic window is a winged head. The right return of the building has five bays, with the three central bays projecting forward on both the ground and first floors, featuring a central, pedimented window on the ground floor. The interior has not been inspected. Lanchester and Lodge also designed the Parkinson Building.
