Description
No. 43 Woodhouse Lane is a Methodist New Connexion chapel, now part of Leeds Metropolitan University, built between 1857 and 1858 by William Hill. The building has been altered in the mid-20th century. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. The structure is two storeys high with a basement and consists of five by seven bays in a classical style.
The façade includes Corinthian pilastered doorways with heavy entablatures and semicircular fanlights, although the fanlight to the right is blocked. There are three round-headed windows on the ground floor. The first floor features an original central round-headed window with carved impost blocks and a keystone, flanked by tall metal-framed windows. The corners are accentuated by rusticated pilasters, and there is a bracketed cornice above. The full-width pediment has a round light and relief foliage in the tympanum, while stepped stone chimneys are located at each end of the roof apex.
On the left return, the fenestration includes both original and altered windows. The chapel was built at a cost of £6,000 and originally contained an organ and a memorial window dedicated to Mr. Alderman Marsden, with school rooms and an institute located in the basement.
