School, now college of art. Dated 1888. Red brick, Flemish bond, stone door and window surrounds and bands at floor levels, terracotta details, slate roof. 2 and a half storeys over a basement, the ground-floor raised. 9 bays on a steeply sloping site. The centre bay breaks forward slightly and has central double panelled doors with fanlight over, Classical surround with pilasters on corniced bases, entablature, pediment; wreaths and foliage in spandrels, date and laurel wreath in tympanum, acroteria. Fenestration: square-headed windows to basement, with small console brackets in the reveals, architraves to ground and 1st floors, round arches to 1st-floor centre and left, lunettes above the windows to right of centre and on right return, shallow brick pilasters between; 2-light attic windows. Terracotta panels below the main windows, and in spandrels of 1st floor right. INTERIOR: doors open into a stairway to the raised ground floor and the 1st-floor right fenestration suggests a principal lecture room. Originally Leeds Boys' Modern School, part of the important group of late C19-early C20 schools built close to the Institute in Cookridge Street (qv). (Ordnance Survey Map of Leeds: 1891-).
