Description

Leeds College of Art and Design is a school, now a college of art, dated 1888. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with stone door and window surrounds and bands at floor levels, terracotta details, and a slate roof. The building has two and a half storeys over a raised basement, with nine bays on a steeply sloping site. The central bay projects slightly and features double panelled doors with a fanlight above, framed by a Classical surround with pilasters on corniced bases, an entablature, and a pediment. The spandrels include wreaths and foliage, with a date and laurel wreath in the tympanum and acroteria. The windows consist of square-headed designs in the basement, with small console brackets in the reveals, architraves on the ground and first floors, and round arches on the first-floor center and left. There are lunettes above the windows to the right of center and on the right return, with shallow brick pilasters in between, and two-light attic windows. Terracotta panels are located below the main windows and in the spandrels of the first floor on the right. Inside, doors lead to a stairway to the raised ground floor, and the fenestration on the right of the first floor suggests a principal lecture room. Originally, it served as Leeds Boys' Modern School and is part of an important group of late 19th to early 20th-century schools built near the Institute on Cookridge Street.
