Description

The Manor House, also known as Clitherow House, dates back to 1480 and is located on the north side of Clapgate. It is believed to have been modified around 1792, possibly by John Carr of York, and is situated near the medieval house of the Archbishops of York. The front is made of ashlar stone and features a blue slate roof. The main part of the house is three stories tall, with an upper story added above the original moulded eaves cornice and plain parapet. There are plain string courses that include the window sills of the ground and first floors, and glazing bars are present only on the top floor.

Flanking the central block are two later-added wings, each two stories high, which terminate with a niche topped by a stone vase; however, the eastern wing has since been removed. The north side of the house features Diocletian and Venetian windows, along with a modern bow. The front includes a glazed porch supported by columns.

Inside, the house contains well-preserved principal rooms with original features such as fireplaces, doors, plasterwork, and panelling, as well as an attractive stair rail. At the time of the survey, the house was noted to be in poor condition. Excavations in the grounds have revealed an apsidal chapel from the 12th century and buildings from the 14th century. The Manor House, its outbuildings, and surrounding walls form a cohesive group.
