Description

3, 4, and 5 Blayds Yard is a row of three houses and workshops built around 1800. They are constructed from red and brown brick in Flemish bond. The buildings are three stories high with a blind back, and Nos 4 and 5 form a mirrored pair. Each house features an entrance door with an overlight and a sash window, although some openings have been blocked. The first floor has two tall windows, each with a 16-pane side-sliding sash and eight fixed lights, while the second floor has two 12-pane side-sliding sashes. Most openings have cambered arches, except for the upper floor of Nos 4 and 5, where the roof and eaves have been replaced, and a loading doorway has been added to the far left. No. 3 has a surviving parapet with stone coping. There is a bracket for an oil or gas lamp outside No. 4.

Inside No. 4, there is a single ground-floor room with stairs opposite the entrance and an inserted partition. The fireplace is located against the partition wall shared with No. 3, with the chimney breast projecting into the room. The stairs consist of two steep flights, resembling a crude ladder type without risers. The upper floors were not examined. This row is an important surviving example of housing built for textile workers in the historic center of Leeds during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, situated in the rear yard of an 18th-century townhouse. The tall first-floor windows suggest that these rooms were used as workshops. The buildings are adjacent to Nos 1 and 2 Blayds Yard, Briggate.
