Description
A row of six estate workers' cottages, now four dwellings and a shop, was likely built in the early 19th century by Peter Atkinson for Edward Lascelles, 1st Earl of Harewood. The cottages are constructed from punch-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. They have a symmetrical facade of twelve bays, with three bays projecting as wings, featuring quoined angles and hipped roofs with side entrances. Doorways are located in bays 3, 5, 8, and 10, and possess ashlar jambs and lintels with chamfered surrounds. Ground-floor windows have monolithic lintels and flush sills, with some retaining original 16-pane Yorkshire sash windows. First-floor windows are square with 12-pane Yorkshire sashes, some of which have been altered. The symmetry of the row has been disrupted by a projecting shop window added in bay 9 and a blocked window in bay 12. Three ridge stacks are located on the main range. The left and right returns incorporate a central doorway, acting as a lobby-entry against a stack, flanked by windows to each floor, with Yorkshire small-pane sashes. Hipped roofs are topped by central ridge stacks. The row is designed to complement numbers 73-77, which are older buildings.
