Description
The Clothworkers' Centenary Concert Hall, formerly known as the Presbyterian Church, is located on Cavendish Road within the University of Leeds campus. Built between 1878 and 1879 by architect James Barlow Fraser, the building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. It is two storeys high and consists of five bays, with a central bay that projects and rises as a three-stage tower topped with a cupola.
The entrance is marked by panelled doors with semicircular overlights in the central and flanking bays, and is accentuated by an Ionic-columned portico with a balustered parapet. A foundation stone on the right bears the inscription: 'FOUNDATION STONE LAID BY/ J G STEVENSON ESQ MP/ 23rd OCT 1878'. Above the entrance, there is a two-light plate-tracery window, while the building features round-arched windows, continuous impost string courses, brick quoin pilasters, and a stone entablature and cornice, complemented by small corner turrets.
The central tower is adorned with a cornice and a blocking course that is intricately carved with swags and flower motifs, and it is capped with pyramid finials. The two-stage cupola features a gilded dome and a finial. The interior has not been inspected.
