Description
Number 3 Stead House is a house that now serves as premises for Leeds University. It was built in 1821, altered in the late 19th century, and restored around 1992. The building was designed by J.S. Morrish for Julia Lyddon. It is constructed of rendered brick with a slate roof and stone details. The house has two storeys and five bays, with a pediment above the central three bays. The central entrance features a restored six-panel door with a semicircular overlight, framed by three-quarter Tuscan columns and an open pediment. The windows are plate-glass sashes, and there is a round-arched window in the tympanum. Additional architectural features include a first-floor sill band, cornice, and blocking course, as well as end stacks. Restoration work was ongoing at the time of the survey. The house was originally known as Preston Lodge and was the first building on land inherited by Julia Silly (later Lyddon) from her uncle, the wealthy Leeds merchant Wade Preston.
