Description
Christ Church is a Gothic revival 'Commissioners' Church built in 1830 by Peter Atkinson. The church is constructed of ashlar and features a pitched slate roof with a parapet and roll top coping. It has a six-bay nave with slender 2-light windows that have traceried heads and hood moulds, with stained glass in all but the eastern bay. Square buttresses support the nave. The small single-bay chancel contains a 3-light stained glass east window. The west tower is three tiers high, with angle buttresses, a 2-light louvred bell-chamber, and a parapet adorned with four tall pinnacles that have conical tops. Inside, there is an elliptical chancel arch, galleries on each side supported by colonnettes with an oak panelled balustrade, and an organ chamber to the left. The church features a tall 'wine-glass' pulpit made of carved oak on a stone base, as well as a carved stone font.
