Description

Wormall's Hall is a 16th-century timber-framed building. The ground floor was re-faced in the 17th century with hammer-dressed stone in 1631. It has a pitched stone slate roof. The upper floor is jettied, projecting over the ground floor. The ground floor features a carriage entrance at the east end, two 7-light stone mullioned windows with chamfered mullions within recessed frames, and a doorway framed with simple, moulded surrounds, a moulded impost, and a flat arch, dated 1631. The first floor has vertical studs with a herringbone pattern of diagonal studs between. Three 7-light wooden mullion-and-transom oriels are present on the first floor, incorporating casements and contemporary diagonal glazing bars. The rear of the building has a projecting wing at the west end. The ground floor of this wing is constructed of hammer-dressed stone, while the first floor has a timber frame with closely spaced vertical studs, rendered with plaster to the west and stone nogging to the east. The interior of the ground floor east room retains some original paneling with moulded muntins and chamfered rails. An oak partition is present in the entrance lobby. A staircase features contemporary turned balusters, ball finials to the newels, and two tiers of balusters to the landing. An upstairs room at the west end has a simple plaster ceiling with a moulded cornice, showcasing a pomegranate detail in the centre within an ornamental square frame. A 19th-century projection obscures an earlier feature, connecting to a block built in 1868 in a neo-Tudor style.
