Description

Church Street Bridge is a road bridge built between 1845 and 1849 over the Huddersfield & Manchester Railway line, designed by engineer Alfred Stanistreet Jee. It is located near the junction of Church Street with Branch Street in the Paddock area of Huddersfield.

The bridge is made of coursed and squared quarry-faced gritstone with ashlar dressings. It features a skewed flying arch that springs directly from the rock of the cutting, crossing the railway at an angle. Both sides of the bridge are similarly detailed, with a segmental arched span made up of rusticated voussoirs that rise from an ashlar impost band. Above the arch, there is a projecting carriageway band and a parapet constructed from coursed quarry-faced stone, topped with rounded and tooled ashlar coping stones. The parapet ends with projecting piers at each side, and there are steel handrails along the top of the coping.
