Description
The east end of Gledholt Tunnels features a pair of railway tunnel portals. The north portal was constructed between 1845 and 1849 for the Huddersfield and Manchester Railway line, designed by engineer Alfred Stanistreet Jee. The south portal was added later, between 1882 and 1886, under engineer J J Lee.
Both portals are made of coursed and squared quarry-faced gritstone with ashlar dressings. They are set into a gritstone wall and have a similar design, although the southern portal is recessed several meters back from the northern one. Each portal features a semi-circular arch with a prominent ashlar roll moulding. On the south side of each portal, there is a projecting rectangular quarry-faced pier. At the top of the wall, a bold ashlar roll moulding serves as a cornice, finishing the structure.
