Description

The gatehouse at No. 30 Lindley, designed by architect Edgar Wood in the 1890s, is a Grade II listed building. It was intended for a house that was never built. The structure is made of hammer-dressed stone and features a pitched stone slate roof. It stands two storeys tall, with a front that includes a two-centred arch with moulded surrounds and a hoodmould. The jambs of the arch taper outwards at the base and are flanked by ledged gates with iron art nouveau hinges and handle, a wicket, and two glazed panels adorned with hoodmoulds in an art nouveau style. Above the arch, there is a three-light stone mullioned window with chamfered mullions and surrounds, and above that, a flush-fronted stone gable with an eccentric design.

To the north of the gate, there are two small low lights with chamfered surrounds, one of which is bipartite, and above them is a mullion and transom cross. A one-storey extension to the north features a single low square light. The front and back walls extend southward a few feet to form a deep buttress. Inside the archway, there is a door with a four-centred head and moulded surround, which is a ledged door with art nouveau panelling and handle. Above the rear arch, there is a three-light stone mullioned window with a vertically scored raised panel extending from the hoodmould up to the parapet.

To the north of the gatehouse, there is a tower with a pyramidal roof, which includes two-light stone mullioned windows. There is also a shallow canted bay to the north of the tower, featuring a three-light mullion and transom cross on the first floor. Additionally, there is one range of two-light stone mullioned windows further north, and a three-light stone mullioned window in the one-storey extension.
