Description
The bridge over the River Calder and its attached walling is a road bridge built in 1882. The masonry work was done by James Wild of Luddenden Foot, while the ironwork was completed by Wood Brothers of Sowerby Bridge, commissioned by the Luddenden Foot Local Board of Health. The structure features a single broad segmental arch made of cast iron, supported by massive rock-faced stone piers. These piers rise into tripartite end piers that have fielded panels and hipped triangular-section coping. A panel on the north-west end pier indicates the date of construction and lists the names of the local board members, the iron founders, and the mason. The cast-iron parapet is approximately 1 metre high and includes fretted panels with saltire crosses and star bosses, topped with a moulded rail and central wooden finials. On the north side, flanking walls extend about 8 metres to the east and 15 metres to the west, with the west wall curving and truncated. These walls are made of large tooled blocks, featuring plinths and triangular-section coping.
