Description
Farmhouse, now house, with separate outbuilding (formerly cross-wing), located off London Road on the east side near Sowerby Bridge.
The building dates from the mid-17th century with possible earlier origins, constructed in several phases, and underwent significant alterations in the late 18th century. It is built of coursed squared stone with a stone slate roof.
The plan follows a traditional hall and cross-wing arrangement with a through passage. The south-east (garden) front presents two storeys across two bays, with an added rear range and cross-wing projecting to the left. The main range features quoins at the corners. The cross-wing displays a six-light double-chamfered mullion window with king mullion and a decorative-stopped hoodmould, with a six-light single-chamfered mullion window above. It has shaped coping and finial with a lateral stack to the right.
The main range door sits to the right of centre with a reset lintel carved "IMM 1664" (possibly the initials of a Milner family member), topped by a circa 1970 arched window. Each floor has four-light flat-faced mullion windows to left and right, with a 19th-century window to the far left on the ground floor. Kneelers and coping appear to the right, with a corniced central ridge stack.
The rear elevation shows the cross-wing set back on the right. The added range does not extend the full width. The main range here features a plain stone-surround doorway and a two-light hollow-chamfered mullion window with a matching three-light window above. The added range contains double-chamfered mullion windows of six and three lights on the ground floor with king mullion, under a continuous dripmould with decorative stops. The first floor has single-chamfered mullion windows of six and three lights with an external stack to the left. The left return of this range has a chamfered quoined doorway to an internal porch, a double-chamfered square light, and a three-light chamfered mullion window above. The right return features double-chamfered mullion windows of three lights (mullions restored) on the ground floor and four lights with diamond-stopped hoodmould on the first floor. The cross-wing has chamfered mullion windows of three and two lights on the ground floor and four lights above. A gutter spout sits in the angle between the added range and cross-wing. The left return has a 19th-century doorway to the left of a three-light window, formerly chamfered mullioned with a similar intact window above.
Internally, the porch contains an inner board doorway with original hinges and a wooden bar in a hole in the passage wall. From the through passage, a recessed chamfered quoined doorway leads to the housebody. This space features a large stop-chamfered quoined Tudor-arched fireplace with a beam above supporting stop-chamfered spine beams and incised joists. Two triangular-headed doorways with pegged wooden surrounds and reused carved panel doors open to the cross-wing. A rail and post with 1958 plank and muntin panelling separates the housebody from the rear kitchen. The kitchen has a large segmental-arched fireplace with a small window beside it, chamfered spine beams, and stop-chamfered joists. The stair incorporates reused turned balusters at the top. The cross-wing ground floor shows a mortice in the soffit of the central cross-beam indicating a former partition position. The first floor retains its plank and muntin partition with incised decoration on the muntins, above which sits a king-post truss with V braces. The first floor of the main range features a chamfered Tudor-arched fireplace with bicusped lintel and moulded cornice in the central room, a central king-post truss with angle braces, and another truss at the right end with V braces, a cambered tie beam, and braces to the ridge piece.
