Description

This is a substantial house dating to the mid to later 18th century, with detached wings creating a forecourt. The main house is constructed of stone and is two storeys high, originally with five windows across the front. It features a Modillion cornice with a wide pediment over a slated roof. A four-columned, Doric entrance portico with a pediment provides access via an arched doorway with side lights. Above the doorway is a Venetian window, flanked by corniced windows. Circular windows are set into the tympanum of the pediment. A later addition connects to the north wing. The south elevation is plainer, with eaves to the roof and an iron escape stair. The rear elevation mirrors the front, but with a rusticated basement, from which a branching stair has been removed. A large Venetian window illuminates the staircase, and a lunette is set into the tympanum of the pediment.

Flanking the main house and enclosing the forecourt are two long, detached wings. These wings are two storeys high and have Modillion eaves cornices with open pediments above large circular windows with a door below, both rusticated in appearance.

The south wing (Nos 1-7, Hope Hall Street) has a number of blocked windows and new openings, and the rear has been altered. The north wing (now Nos 35 and 37) has been considerably altered, especially at the rear where it is partially unroofed. There are two pairs of low, rusticated gate piers, decorated with enrichment. The interior of the main house boasts a good stone staircase, which is separated from the hall by a Doric colonnade. There is also a decorated ceiling. A south-rear room of particular interest features a Corinthian colonnade, although much of the rest of the interior has been altered.
