Description

The Great Northern Shed is a railway engine shed built in 1885 for the Lancashire and Yorkshire and Great Northern Railway Companies. It is constructed of dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs. The building has a two-storey curved east front with ten bays, each topped by a shallow gable and separated by pilasters, along with a thick band at the first floor. The ground floor includes a pair of metal frame glazing bar windows in each bay.

The north front consists of five bays with engine openings below, one of which is obscured by a single-storey office wing that has a chimney stack. Above, there are five metal frame glazing bar windows, one of which has been replaced by a fire door. The west front also has ten bays, similarly topped by shallow gables and pilasters, with a thick first floor band. The ground floor features pairs of metal frame glazing bar windows in each bay, with the remnants of the original engine canopy above, and pairs of segment-headed metal frame windows above that. The south front has five bays, starting with a single window, followed by three engine openings, and then a two-storey, four-bay office wing to the right.

It is important to note that this building is located off South Parade in Halifax. It was mistakenly added to the 70th list of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest in the City of Bradford on 18th February 1991, but has since been removed from that list.
