Description
Aireworth Mill is a mill built in the late 18th century to early 19th century, with some later additions. It features coursed stone construction and roofs made of stone slate and Welsh slate. The main range is three storeys high and consists of 13 bays on the left, with a taller, six-bay section added on the right. All windows have glazing bars, stone cills, and lintels. The left-hand section includes a bricked-up arch with voussoirs on the right, and two doors to its left. The rear of the building has loading bays and a semicircular stair tower with curved windows that also have glazing bars, topped with an embattled parapet. The right return of the mill features a clock set in an architrave at the gable.
In front and to the left of the main range is the engine house, which has a round-arched, voussoired doorway with an impost band and a keyed oculus above, along with a hoist. The coping is made of ashlar stone, while the left return is constructed of brick. Both returns have shaped gutter brackets on the table. The mill has a tall, tapering, octagonal chimney, which is disused at the time of resurvey. In 1790, the mill was operated by John Greenwood for cotton spinning. Greenwood and his son later built Vale Mill on Vale Mill Lane.
