Description

The main block of Lilycroft Board School was built in 1872-73 by Hope and Jardine for the Bradford School Board. This long, single-storey building is constructed of sandstone "brick" with ashlar dressings and is designed in a late 13th century Gothic style. The façade is symmetrically arranged, featuring kneelered gables above taller windows, cross-gabled wings, and an off-centre group of gabled halls. The hall includes a triple group of lancet windows with trefoils, flanked by gabled porches. The left porch serves as the base of a tower, which has chamfered corners that lead to an octagonal belfry topped with a short stone spire pierced by gablets. The building is covered with steep slate roofs, and the hall is supported by carved angel brackets that hold up the roof trusses.
