Description
Nos. 3 and 5 Tong Lane is a two-storey cottage dating from the mid to late 17th century. The right-hand section of the front and part of the rear wing is constructed of brick, while the remainder is made of coursed gritstone. The building features a weathered string course above the ground floor in the brick section and has a stone slate roof. A projecting stone bay is gabled, with a saddlestone and one kneeler, topped with a stone lantern finial that has a ball capping, which is a badge of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. The cottage includes four, five, and six-light chamfered mullion windows and doorways with chamfered jambs and raised drip moulds. Number 5 has a door with six vertical panels and moulded muntins. There are two-light chamfered mullion windows on the west gable end return. Inside, the ground floor room of the gabled brick section features reset 17th-century plank and muntin panelling, along with some chamfered ceiling beams, although the interior has been modernised in parts.
