Description
The K1 telephone kiosk, likely a Mk 235 model, was designed in 1922 and built between 1922 and 1927 by the Office of Engineer in Chief GPO. It was moved to its current location alongside the weir at Dean Beck, Newsholme Dean, and repurposed as housing for water-flow measuring equipment in the mid-20th century.
The kiosk is made of pre-cast concrete, with metal window frames and a timber door. It has a square plan and is situated on the north side of the weir. The structure consists of rectangular pre-cast concrete sections bolted together to form a box shape, resting on a wide concrete base. It features a pyramidal roof with a cornice and is topped by a ball finial. Originally, the kiosk would have been painted white, with the glazing frames and door painted red. The rear of the kiosk is solid and panelled, with two lower panels and a larger upper panel, along with ventilation holes at the top and bottom. The sides are similarly styled, but the larger upper panel on the right side has a window opening with metal frames arranged in a three-row, two-one-two light configuration; however, this side has largely lost its frame and none of the glazing remains. The remains of the panelled timber door are visible at the back, which would have originally featured a glazing-bar configuration similar to the side panels, but the glazing bars and most of the upper section of the door are missing.
Inside, the kiosk is plain, but remnants of window-sill shelving can be seen on each side. The floor has been cut away, likely for the installation of water-flow equipment that has since been removed.
