Description

Back Shaw is a farmhouse and cottage that has been combined into a single dwelling, with an attached barn. It dates from the mid to late 18th century, while the barn was built in 1840. The building features coursed stone slate roofs and is two storeys high.

The house has two first-floor windows and a door to the right set in a plain stone surround with interrupted jambs. To the left, there is a 20th-century stone and glass pent-porch. Each floor has one Blight window and one three-light flat-faced mullion window. The right side has a shaped kneeler and ashlar coping, with an off-centre ridge stack.

The cottage section steps forward to the left and consists of one bay. It has a door to the right, which leads into a later single-storey pent-roof wash-kitchen. Each floor has one two-light flat-faced mullion window, along with a shaped kneeler, ashlar coping, and an end stack to the left.

The barn is attached to the rear of the house at a right angle and has five bays. The second bay features a segmental-arched cart entry with quoins and voussoirs, and a round-arched slit vent above. To the right, there is a mistal door with a plain stone surround and interrupted jambs. A trough to the left of this door is inscribed 'JM 1841' (John Middlesbrook). The fourth bay has a stable door with a pitching hole above, while the fifth bay breaks forward and has a blocked doorway. The right side of the barn has a shaped kneeler and coping. The rear shows evidence of different building phases and a blocked cart entry.
