Description

The Trustee Savings Bank, built in 1894 with mid-20th century alterations, is located on Ecclesall Road in Sheffield. Designed by JB Mitchell-Withers for the Sheffield Union Banking Company, the building is constructed of brick with an ashlar front and features a gabled and hipped slate roof with various stacks.

The exterior includes a plinth, a rusticated ground floor, quoins, a minor cornice, and an eaves cornice. The building stands three storeys tall and has a three-window range, with a total of 3 x 7 windows. It occupies a triangular corner site. The upper floors are divided by giant pilasters and feature plain sashes with reflective glass. The corner entrance bay has three windows, with the larger central window topped by a segmental pediment, and three smaller windows above it. Below, there is a semicircular rusticated porch with an entablature and a coped blocking course. The doorcase is moulded ashlar with a scroll bracket supporting the cornice, and it has renewed panelled double doors. On either side of the entrance, there are small casements with voussoirs.

The right return of the building has six plain sashes with segmental pediments and six smaller windows above. Below these, there are five casements and a blank space, all featuring voussoirs. A narrower entrance bay to the right has a moulded four-panel door with an overlight, and above it, there is a small sash window between each floor. To the right, there is an ashlar porch with a plain door. The plinth has a cast-iron milestone attached. The angled left return includes a panelled coped rear wall stack and a single window with a segmental pediment, along with a smaller window above it. The ground floor has a single window with a multiple keystone, and to its left, there is an angled single-storey projection with a smaller similar window. Beyond this, there is a brick rear range with a massive coped brick and ashlar side wall stack.

The interior has been refitted, and ceilings were inserted in the late 20th century.
