Description

This is a former barn, likely of medieval origin but with a date before 1700, which was in use as a cafe in 2021 and has undergone alterations in the 20th and 21st centuries. The barn is constructed of stone and timber, with slate roofs. It is aligned roughly north-south, forming the single-storey south end of a range; the two-storey north end, which is part of the adjacent farmhouse at numbers 35 and 37, is not included in the listing.

The south wall, approximately 6 metres wide, is rendered over brickwork in an English Garden Wall bond and features a 20th-century square shop window. The east front, approximately 16 metres long, is largely constructed of roughly-squared stone laid in irregular courses, with some irregular brick door jambs. A blocked doorway is visible, along with an inserted window. Further along are a blocked window, a small window, a double doorway, two single doorways, a square window, and a large double doorway fitted with sliding metal doors. Exposed ends of three timber tie-beams delineate four bays. Bays 1 and 2 are roofed with heather slate, while bays 3 and 4 are roofed with blue slate, and numerous roof vents are present.

At the south end, the west wall has a linear buttress 10 metres long and half a metre wide. Above the buttress, the walling is random-coursed and patched with mortar, with one exposed tie-beam end. A doorway with a modern door is situated at the north end of the buttress. The north walling is more regular, featuring a single small vent opening. The wall abuts an extension to number 35, where plaster has been applied to its outer face. To the north, the barn abuts the gable end of number 35, with its purlins embedded within the gable wall.

Inside, the wall and floor finishes are modern. Applied timbers mimic cruck frames and wallplates on the inner faces of the walls of bays 1 and 2, which form the cafe area. Cruck 2 spans the cafe, defining the space between bays 1 and 2, and side and ridge purlins are visible in both bays. Bays 3 and 4 are now used for storage, with tiled walls in bay 3. Crucks 3 and 4 stand within bay 3, with a modern wall defining bay 4 to the north of cruck 4; the purlin arrangement is consistent throughout.

The tie-beams of crucks 2 and 3 have been truncated between the cruck blades. Crucks 3 and 4 are missing their collars, although cruck 4 retains its tie-beam. All visible crucks have their apex collars intact. Cruck 3 has a curved wind brace on its eastern blade, lapped over the outer face of the blade just above the tie-beam and over the side-purlin, above collar level.
