Description

The Filemakers' Manufactory, located immediately to the north-west of Number 11 on High Street in Ecclesfield, is a preserved Scheduled Ancient Monument dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of sandstone with Welsh and stone slate roofs. The manufactory consists of an irregular range of four small buildings that are set at right angles to the street, mostly single-storey, and includes a filemakers' workshop, a warehouse and packing shop, a hardening and tanging shop, and a cart shed.

The workshop features a rubble stone plinth, a framed door to the right, and a continuous row of small-pane wood casements to the left. It has a single pitch roof that is coped at the left end and a central brick stack. The warehouse is two storeys tall, with a boarded door to the right beneath a stone lintel, and a central five-light casement with a later window directly above.

The hardening shop has a boarded door and a garage door, while the tanging shop includes a boarded door and an open wood-framed three-light window with an internal shutter, along with brick chimneys at the ridge. The cart shed is open-fronted and features a central column built up with grindstones.

Inside, the workshop retains eight workplaces, known as 'stitheys', arranged along the window, each with a stone stump for cutting files and a hearth at the rear. The packing shop contains a workbench, and the tanging shop has two hearths with brick firehoods.
