Description

Brooklyn Works is a steel and file works dating from the mid-19th century with later 20th-century alterations. It was built for Alfred Beckett & Sons, Ltd. The building is constructed of red brick, partially rendered, with ashlar dressings and slate roofs.

The riverside range is single-storeyed and features a 12-window frontage. To the left, seven coped gables rise above a coursed squared stone basement. Each gable has a segment-headed three-light casement window, with a round ventilator above. A single-storey link building connects to a rendered and painted gable end, which exhibits three blank segment-headed windows above a rendered relief sign displaying the firm's name and decorative flourishes, topped by a coped gable with three ball finials. The right return has eight segment-headed windows, some blocked. A set-back two-storey range has six side wall stacks. This range features six two-light casement windows to the left and six glazing bar sash windows to the right, all segment-headed. The ground floor has seven windows and a pair of large doors.

The Green Lane frontage includes a two-storey range with an angled corner and eight casements on each floor. To the right is a block with a string course and moulded eaves, featuring a pair of tall, narrow windows flanked to the left by two larger windows and to the right by three. Below is a doorcase with a cornice, flanked by two windows to the left and one to the right. A three-storey mid-19th century block has a plinth, string course, and dentilled wooden eaves. A rendered relief sign displaying the firm’s name is located between the lower floors. The block has nine windows on each floor, mainly plain sashes. The ground floor has a cart entrance with a pair of doors, flanked to the right by three windows. To the left is a doorcase with a cornice and overlight, flanked to the right by a window and to the left by two windows. The rendered right gable displays a segment-headed rendered relief sign with the firm's name.

The interior was not inspected. At the time of survey, the building was vacant. The Beckett's gable wall with sign, previously listed, is integrated within the riverside range, with this new listing encompassing the entire works.
