Description
31 Castlegate is a late medieval building that features timber framing and is a fragment of a larger house. The front was altered in the early 19th century and is made of red brick with a pantile roof. The structure has two storeys and consists of two bays with cased sash windows. There is a door located in a recessed porch that has a stucco surround and a moulded cornice. The frame jetties out at the front, with one post on a tall stone plinth visible at the south end, supporting a crown post truss that is braced to the tie beam. Another truss can be seen internally, which includes a crown post, longitudinal bracing, and a collar purlin. The remaining common rafters and collars appear to be original. At the back, there is an 18th-century wing that is partly roughcast, partly made of limestone rubble, and partly red brick, also with a pantile roof, and it has two storeys.
