Description
The war memorial, dating from around 1920, is located in a small garden area on Churchfield Road, the main street in the village of Clayton, at the junction with Tan Pit Lane. The designer of the memorial is unknown.
The memorial features a simple Latin cross atop a tapering octagonal column, which is supported by an octagonal plinth. The plinth bears the inscription: "REMEMBER THE MEN OF CLAYTON WITH FRICKLEY WHO DIED FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY." Below this inscription, the names of seven casualties from World War I and four from World War II are listed in alphabetical order by surname. The plinth is raised on a flight of three octagonal steps, with the lowest step made of replacement stone, and is surrounded by low posts connected by simple chains.
While the exact date of the memorial's erection is unclear, an order of service related to it is dated between 1920 and 1923. The commissioning and design details remain unknown. In 2007, the memorial received a grant for repairs, which included the replacement of the stone on the lower step.
