Description
Tankersley Old Hall is a ruined mansion dating from the late 16th century, which incorporates parts of an earlier structure and was dismantled around 1730. The building is constructed of ashlar and rubble sandstone and currently has no roof. It features a rectangular tower with two by three bays and an undercroft, with the remains standing over two storeys high. The east wall was originally the end of the earlier house and has internal features that are now exposed.
On the south side, corner piers flank two basement windows that have two lights and are set in chamfered, projecting surrounds. There are also two ground floor windows that were originally of two lights, and above them, the first floor has transomed and cavetto-moulded windows beneath a string course, although the upper walling is now in ruins. The north side features three-light mullioned windows set in a chamfered plinth, along with transomed three-light windows on the first floor.
The east side has a ground floor fireplace on the left, which has a moulded arched lintel with a triangular extrados. There are joist corbels and brickwork above that includes two moulded fireplaces, with another fireplace above on the left that has a relieving arch. The mansion is believed to have been built for the 6th Earl of Shrewsbury, according to the Arundel Manuscripts. It belonged to the Savile family until it was taken over by Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford, in the early 17th century. By the time it was leased to the Fanshawe family in 1653, it was already in disrepair and was finally dismantled around 1730. At the time of the resurvey, the ruin was under consolidation.
