Description
128, 130, and 132 Micklegate is a house dating from the mid-18th century that was subdivided in the early 19th century and features a 20th-century shopfront. The front is made of stuccoed brick, while the right side is constructed of red brick in stretcher bond. It has a double-span roof covered with pantiles, which is partly hidden by a parapet that is interrupted by pilaster piers and has a shallow moulded cornice.
The exterior has a three-storey, four-window front. The shopfront extends across the ground floor of the adjacent No. 136. At the right end, there is an upstairs access door with six panels, which is reached by two steps. The first and second-floor windows are sash windows, with four panes and twelve panes respectively. All windows feature keyed flat arches beneath the stucco, and the second-floor windows have painted sills. There are four-course raised bands of brick at the second floor and beneath the parapet, which returns at the right end.
At the rear, there is a three-storey, three-window central block flanked by two projecting wings, each three storeys high with one window. The windows here are also sash windows, either four panes or eight panes, with flat brick arches, most of which have been altered. Raised brick bands run across the central block and wings at the first and second floor levels.
Inside, the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHM) records fragments of the original staircase, which features turned and twisted balusters that have been reused in the current staircase.
