Description

No 150 on Micklegate is a shop and office building from the mid-19th century that was modernised in the 20th century. The ground floor features sandstone ashlar with panels of vermiculated rustication, while the upper floor is made of orange-red brick in a Flemish bond, accented with pilasters and window surrounds of cream brick. The building has ashlar dressings and moulded cream brick details, with brick stacks, one topped with a cornice, on a slate roof.

The building occupies a corner site and is two storeys high, with two unequal bays facing Micklegate and four unequal bays on Bar Lane, including a canted half bay at the corner. The shopfronts extend around both sides, featuring pilaster piers on plain plinths, moulded imposts, and a dentilled cornice. A modern shop door is located in the corner bay, while the left end bay on the Bar Lane front has sunk-panelled double doors beneath a tall overlight that leads to a staircase. Other openings include modern shop windows or glazed folding doors.

On the first floor, the bays are defined by pilasters on sunk-panelled plinths, supporting a continuous entablature with an enriched moulded cornice and a low parapet with moulded coping. Each bay features a round-headed sash window set in a round-arched surround with moulded imposts and a hood of attached mouldings. A moulded plinth string creates a sill band. On the Micklegate front, the left bay has a wide two-light window with a semi-circular arched head, while the right bay has a narrow standard window. The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value as an important part of this historic street.
