Description

58 and 60 Micklegate are two houses located in York. Number 58 dates from the late 18th century and was refronted around 1835, at which time Number 60 was rebuilt. Both houses feature shopfronts that were also added around 1835. The exterior is constructed of pink and white mottled brick in Flemish bond, with a timber eaves band. The rear of Number 58 is made of pale brick with red brick dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof that has a brick stack at the right end.

The front of the building is three stories high and has four windows. The paired shopfronts are adorned with fluted and panelled pilasters, a dentilled cornice on fluted corbel brackets, and a deep fascia. The shop doors are glazed and panelled, set deeply recessed to the left of plate glass windows that rest on panelled risers. Number 58 features one-pane sash windows on the first and second floors, while Number 60 has twelve-pane sash windows. All windows have painted stone sills and flat brick arches. At the rear, there are tripartite sash windows with segmental arches, and Number 58 has a brick dentil eaves cornice.

Inside, Number 58 has a round arch on panelled pilasters with moulded imposts in the entrance passage. There is a close string staircase leading to the third floor, featuring slender turned balusters and a ramped-up, moulded handrail that is wreathed at the foot around a turned newel on a shaped curtail step. Number 60 has a close string staircase with slender turned balusters and large turned newels leading to the second half landing, with square-section balusters above.
