Description
77 and 79 Micklegate is a house built around 1790, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and a shopfront added in the 20th century. The front is made of stucco designed to look like ashlar, while the rear is constructed from orange-red brick in stretcher bond. It features a timber modillion cornice above a hipped slate roof, which has scrolled corner brackets and a brick chimney stack.
The building is three storeys high and has three bays on both fronts, situated on a corner site. The shopfront on Micklegate retains an earlier cornice and extends along Trinity Lane, featuring a canted corner door that is accessed by a shaped stone step. On the left end of the Micklegate front, there is an upstairs door made of six fielded panels, topped with an overlight and approached by stone steps. This door is set within a doorcase that has narrow pilasters, a triglyph frieze, and a moulded cornice hood supported by fluted console brackets. The upper floors on both fronts have blind openings in the center, flanked by four-pane sash windows, all beneath incised wedge lintels. There are sill bands on both floors, and a raised band on the second floor that returns on the Trinity Lane front.
Inside, the ground floor features a moulded cornice in the entrance hall and a round arch leading to the staircase hall, supported by pilaster responds with a fluted keyblock and imposts. The open string staircase has shaped tread ends, slender turned balusters, and a ramped-up moulded handrail that rises from the ground floor to the attic. Original fireplaces with cast-iron grates are present throughout the building. In the attic, there is one surviving plank and muntin partition wall.
