Description

This is a terrace of two pairs of cottages, built around 1909-1914. Designed by Parker and Unwin for the Joseph Rowntree Village Trust, it exemplifies early 20th-century low-cost housing development. The construction is primarily brick, with a French tile roof. The layout features a lobby entrance leading to a living room and scullery.

The terrace is two storeys high, with seven first-floor windows in total, divided evenly between the two pairs of cottages. A central, weatherboarded gable is present on each pair. The ground floor has half-glazed doors and plate glass sash windows. First-floor windows are 4-pane sashes. A central, round-arched passage runs through the terrace. Each pair of cottages features two 4-light canted bay windows on the ground floor, positioned either side of doors set within round arches featuring decorative tiles. The first floor has a central, flat-topped 2-light half dormer, flanked by single-pane casements set at a slightly lower level. Each gable has a pair of 3-light casements. The roof is hipped, although the stacks have been removed.

The terrace is historically significant for its contribution to the development of low-cost housing in Britain, particularly influencing the Tudor Walters Report of 1918 and subsequently the Addison Act of 1919, which shaped government policy on housing.
