Description
Nos 65-71 on Chestnut Grove is a terrace consisting of two pairs of cottages built between 1909 and 1914 by Parker and Unwin for the Joseph Rowntree Village Trust. The cottages are constructed of brick with a French tile roof and feature a lobby entry that leads to a living room and scullery. They are two stories high with nine first-floor windows, each pair having a central weatherboarded gable. The ground floor has half-glazed doors and plate glass sash windows, while the first floor has 4-pane sash windows. There is a central round-arched through passage, and each pair of cottages includes two 4-light canted bay windows flanked by doors under segmental arches. A continuous string course runs along the facade. On the first floor, there is a central flat-topped 2-light half dormer flanked by single-pane casements at a slightly lower level. Each gable features a pair of 3-light casements, and there are 2-light windows in the outer bays. The roof is hipped, and the stacks have been removed. New Earswick is significant for its role in the development of low-cost housing in Britain, with practices established here influencing the Tudor Walters Report of 1918 and the subsequent Addison Act of 1919.
