Description

Varvil's Court consists of flats, offices, and shops built in the late 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The front is constructed of greyish cream brick in Flemish bond, featuring ashlar dressings, while the right side and rear are made of pink mottled brick in English garden wall bond. The building has a pierced parapet and a slate roof, with brick stacks that have corbelled cornices.

The exterior is four stories high with a three-bay front, displaying two windows in each bay. There is a segmental carriage arch with a hoodmould and moulded imposts situated between a modern shopfront on the right and part of a late 19th-century shopfront on the left, which is shared with No. 40. The upper floors retain original one-pane sashes in No. 38, while No. 36 has been altered to feature two-light casements with transoms. All windows have cambered arches and segmental hoodmoulds, which are continuous on the first floor and paired on the second floor. The third-floor windows are recessed beneath corbelled arches and a heavy continuous hood. There is a moulded sill band on the first floor and plain sill bands on the second and third floors.

Inside, there is a recessed six-panel door with a segment-headed overlight to the left of the arch. The building features modillion eaves cornices on both sides and a cross-vaulted ceiling with a foliate boss at the intersection. At the rear of No. 38, there is a close string staircase with turned balusters and a moulded handrail.
