Description

This house, located at 19 Bishophill Senior in York, dates from the early 18th century and features an early 19th-century extension along with 20th-century modernizations. The front is constructed of pink-orange brick in Flemish bond, accented with orange-red brick quoins and dressings, and has an ashlar doorcase. The right side is finished in stucco. The building has dentil and modillion eaves on three sides and a slate hipped roof with brick stacks and wrought-iron corner brackets.

The exterior consists of a three-storey, one-window front with a gable end facing the street. The entrance is located in a two-storey porch that projects from the right side. The street-facing front features a tripartite sash window with a 12-pane centre window on the ground floor, which has a renewed sill. Above, on the first floor, there is a canted oriel window with three 18-pane sashes beneath a dentil cornice. The second floor has a squat 6-pane sash window with a painted stone sill and a flat arch made of gauged brick. Raised brick bands are present at the first and second floor levels.

At the rear, there is a 16-pane sash window on the first floor and a squat 8-pane sash window on the second floor. The right return of the building has three storeys and three bays, with a two-storey projecting porch at the centre featuring a moulded stone cornice. The left side of the porch has a plain pedimented doorcase with an architrave, containing a door made of six raised and fielded panels with an overlight. The ground and first floor windows are unequal 15-pane sashes, while the second floor features squat 6-pane sashes, all with rendered sills and keyblocks. Raised bands are also present at the first and second floor levels.

The interior has not been inspected, but records from the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England indicate that it includes an original staircase with two turned balusters per tread and a moulded handrail, as well as a single original fireplace in the first-floor south-west room.
